About a little bit about my jewellery:
a little bit about me:
Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, I had a keen interest in art at a very young age. Painting is all I wanted to do at kindergarten, and that continued right through my education.
At the age of 15 I decided it would be wonderful to travel to England to broaden my horizons, experience new places, and visit some far off godparents.
I gained my parent's consent and began to make beaded and sequined hair accessories and sold them to small boutiques in and around Melbourne to save the funds for the trip.
With this done I aimed to be in England for 6 months...
After five years and eight GCSE exams, 5 A-Level exams, one Life Drawing Diploma, and a Distinction in Foundation Arts I finally decided to come back home to Melbourne.
Having very little in the way of art materials over here and very little money, I decided to start playing around with different materials making small items of jewellery. While searching for different materials to use I bought a large box of tape measures going cheap at a discount art store, thinking maybe I could have a play around with some of it to make into jewellery pieces.
That was 2 and a half years ago, and much refinement of design and process has gone in to the jewellery I sell today.
All my tape measure jewellery pieces are made out of plastic coated fibreglass tailors' tape measure. Each roll, bend and curve I shape by hand, then glue in to place.
I sketch each design before making one up out of tape measure, then change the design according to any adjustments I want to make to this first mock-up. This process sometimes repeats itself several times before I am happy with the design. Each bend and curve is very carefully considered according to how I think it harmonises with the rest of the piece.
Some pieces, you will notice, I use the whole tape measure and they are larger and have more depth. Other pieces, such as the storm earring studs I use just the millimetre edging of the tape measure, cutting it lengthways before I start.
I then attach brooch pins, chains or earring posts, type out the backing cards on my grandfather's old typewriter (using nursery rhymes that relate in some way to the piece it will hold) slip it into a bag and post it off to a customer.
I am more than happy to take commissions, if you would like a particular item made out of tape measure, or if you would like a particular tape measure of yours made into something, or even if you would just like the backing card it comes on to be personalised with your own message so you can use it as a gift for a friend.
I pride myself on quality design and construction, and should there ever be any problems with a purchased item, I'm happy to make repairs or adjustments.
Feel free to get in contact, even if it's just to say hi!
